My LT2042 makes a loud click when I turn the key to the first position and nothing else when I turn the key to crank. When I turn the key to the off position, there is a sound as if an electromagnet is releasing. Is this a foulty relay or something else? Is it a failry simple fix?

100% confident. I put a trickle charger on the existing battery and let it get a thorough charge. Then I installed a new battery and got the same result.
