Good evening,
I have a 1984 582 special. I can not get the pto switch to stay locked in the on position. I got a new switch from cub cadet and still the same. In order to mow with it I have to hold it on while trying to mow. And yes after about a hour of mowing it gets pretty hard to hold on cuz my thumb is tierd. Thanks for your help Jim

It's not the switch, it's probably the safety switch relay going out. That's what usually causes those symptoms.

Hey Jim, I have the same problem.
Did you ever find a solution?

I have verified the brake cut-off switch is working.. and replaced the pto switch- no change. Not sure where to go from here..?
