My original 1965 cub has an engine problem and I could use some suggestions on how to proceed. It is my primary mower and started acting up last use. As I was mowing it started to have a knock and lost power then stopped. It would not restart, next day I checked it over and found the following. It had compression, did try to start with knock so shut off, shaft was not loose, not sure how to proceed. Would appreciate any suggestions on my next step. Thanks Jay [email protected]

Jay - we need more info on what your tractor is. There were several models made in 1965. If you don't know the model could you at least tell us the engine hp and whether it's a gear drive or hydrostatic drive.

Update it is a 1963 sn 54675, kohler 7hp, originally had creeper but removed. I am not an engine guy, with compression, able to turn over and start, with loud clunk (technical term) not sure where to begin.

I would probably pull the head and turn it over by hand to make sure everything is behaving properly.

At this point, if it were mine, I would be removing the engine from the chassis, and pulling the pan. On a Cub it’s not too bad. 4 bolts in the pan through the frame, a few electrical connections, and since it’s an Original, the belt to the clutch. I think there is a service manual in the manuals section. That should get you started. Once you can look into the crankcase and report back, we can help with the next step.
