I have a CCC 782 with a Magnum 18 repower. Starter started skipping chattering, grinding and struggling to turn engine over. Replaced starter with new one rebuilt by a reputable starter shop with extensive Cub Cadet experience. Worked for a short while now the problems back. What did I miss?

Did you look at the gear on the flywheel? Damaged or missing teeth? Also the alignment between the starter gear and the flywheel gear..

Try lubricating the bendix with some sort of spray dry lube. PB Blaster's Garage Door Lube is one example.

make sure the battery is supplying enough voltage and amps, easy check is to jump the battery or make sure that it is fully charged

After removal of the starter and taking it back to the shop they replaced the entire bendix assembly under warranty. Brought it home worked perfectly. For about two weeks. Now it's back to the same old same old. I read the Cub Faqs about tearing the whole thing apart and basically blueprinting it. Is that the only way?
