Hello everybody, my name is Cade and I just bought a sweet running 382 as my first old school mower. It was kind of an impulse buy, thought I was buying one I could run a tiller and stuff on the back. Should have researched more. Anyways after I got it home noticed a few quirks. The PTO doesn't want to stay on for more than 15 seconds unless you hold it forward. Now today it threw the drive belt off just going slowly not mowing and I tried to put it back on the way a picture shows it routed but it's flailing around like hell if I let the clutch out. Time to get schooled on my new mower I guess.

Cade, WELCOME!

Does your 382 have the gear drive or the Hydrostatic transmission? If it has the gear drive the service manual for the Model 76 would be very close for most stuff. Here's a LINK TO THE MODEL 76 SERVICE MANUAL

Hey Kraig! It's a hydrostatic. I found a manual off of Cub Cadets website but in my opinion it's not too thorough. Does anyone have any idea why my pto doesn't want to stay engaged?

William:

According to Parts Lookup (above), if it is a Hydrostatic, its a 383. It also looks like for several assemblies the Serial Number break is important. Do you know your Serial Number?

The PTO appears to be common to both. Judging from the assembly depicted on Parts Lookup, I would be looking at all the pulleys, their bearings, the linkages, etc to be sure that I have all the parts and that they are assembled correctly with as little play as possible. Problem could be in the deck itself, the spindle bearings and/or the pulleys. I would especially pay attention to how Arm Assembly (Item 13 [10?]) engages the Idler pulley (Item 11).

If it's red it will say "382 Hydro" and not 383. If it's yellow and white it is probably a 383.
