Hi, I have a IH 782 ser# 2050594u667541 that I bought to use, but now I'm considering restoration for it.

I've found another red 782 on CL but I think from the ser# that it's a CCC machine. The guy says it has a Briggs. It's ser#2050601u716473.

Can some of you confirm my ser# checking and outline some of the differences between the two machines. Any advice will be appreciated.

IH 782's had serial numbers less than <699,999

CCC 782's had serial numbers greater than 700,000>

Ken,

I have a CCC 782 SN 714899, as I understand it, when MTD set up Cub Cadet Corporation, production moved from Louisville, KY to Brownsville, TN. Again, from what I understand, the only change MTD/CCC made was to replace the IH Cast Iron rear end housing and helical cut gears with straight-cut gears in an aluminum housing. Other than that, a model 782, either IH or CCC should have a Kohler KT17 two-cylinder motor 17 hp installed. The series I KT17 had oiling problems and most have been replaced over time. The 682 also had a Kohler KT17 motor, but no hydralic lift. The 582 was fitted with a Briggs & Stratton 16 hp motor and a three-speed transmission.

Check out the Cub Cadet History on the Extreme Motorworks website, its very informative. (Extreme Motorworks is a forum sponsor, there is a link at the top of the page.)

Keep in mind also, that the CCC Cubs from 700,000-719,999, still had the CI rear end. The change to Al was at 720,000.

Thanks to all of you. I'll let you know how it works out. Again, thanks a million....

Thom:
Thank you for the clarification on the serial numbers! I thought I had an aluminum rearend because it was Cub Cadet Corporation machine. I wasn't paying much attention when I changed the fluid, do you know if the gears are straight-cut or helical?

The CI rear will have the helical gears, and the aluminum rears have straight-cut gears.

There are also numerous subtle differences, like axle/dash tower color, the 'International' text on the dash, and other things that gradually changed as the IH parts ran out. The frames actually have some subtle differences, too.
