Does the engine (Kohler KT17) need to be pulled to replace the starter on a IH 782 tractor? Or can you access it with the engine in place?
 
John Stevens: That depends on what you call "pull."

I used to wrestle the starter off the 16 HP opposed-cylinder Briggs & Stratton replacement motor installed in my 782. I remember removing the bolts that held the blower housing, and carefully removing the starter's mounting bolts. But I still had to loosen and/or remove some of the engine mounting bolts in order to fish the starter out of there. But I didn't have to mess with disconnecting the ignition or removing the drive shaft, let alone the front grille.

Pick your poison, either way it is a bit of a hassle.

Yes, you can change the starter on the KT-17 without pulling the engine. BTDT.

However, it is a whole lot easier if you raise the engine.
