Cyclops with 16 hp briggs any good ?

1995 1641 has a non original 54'' deck. not attathed...this out to be interesting

The Vanguards are the best engines Cub Cadets ever had. I've run Vanguard repowers for years. Can't beat em.

The front bumper alone is a $150+ part. Looks like it was a good deal. I believe I saw it on CL pretty cheap.

Sand spiders and mouse nest, very familiar sight by me.
Vick's vaporub will be your friend. A very little bit on the harness and a little on a rag left under the hood will keep the mice away.

The old 1872 ran a 60" deck with a 18HP Kohler Mamgum, great engine but I bet the Vanguard has more torque? That old 18 also ran a 451 blower through some big snows.

The 16Hp will pull a 54", but it's going to be slow go.

The Briggs Vanguard are ok. They are sensitive to overheating. They pull valve guides and bend pushrods if they get too hot. So keep the engine spotless and run at full throttle and it should live.
