Nigel, I have scans of the Operator's Manual that I could email to you. It's 40 pages (files) and about 4MB. Here's the Lubrication Table from the manual. Not sure about the dip stick and how long it should be. Perhaps you should try to order a new one, P/N: 703-0911.

Nigel My 1541 trans dipstick reads full @ 10.5" down from inside the top of dipstick tube ...I'm assuming it has the correct dipstick, I've had it in my possession only 14 months.The part # superseded to #903-0911 for the dipstick.
