I have a 1990's model 1440. One of the 2 springs under the seat has broken. I bought 2 new springs but it looks like I have to take the whole seat assembly off the tractor to take it apart. Is this correct and how do you go about it?

Not sure if you solved this issue yet or not. After struggling removing the seats a few times, I now remove everything at once by unbolting the seat slide rails. That way it all comes off at once. The bottom seat probably has to be off or at least loosened to get to the nuts/washers of the mounting bolt for your broken spring. When you have it all off you can separate the slide rails to clean and lube them. Usually a few finger pinches before it is over.
