Working on my Original. Can someone tell me where the battery ground cable was actually attached to the chassis from the factory?
 
I believe it went to the starter/generator. I ran it to the base of the pedestal on mine.

After looking over more info I believe it originally went to one of the mounting bracket bolts for the starter/generator where the bracket mounts to the engine block. That bolt is behind the S/G in the photo from the manual that I posted above.
