I have a lead on an IH Cadet 80 with a deck and snow blower. (It seems as if I buy snow blowers when the temperature is torridly hot!) I can pick it up for a couple of hundred bucks. Is this any sort of a deal? What do I need to know about these machines before I go to look at it? What are special things/issues I should look for? Will it be an easy refurb, or another nightmare like my 1250?

Brian: I don't know much about a Model 80, and I can't access Parts Lookup from my phone. From the Lawn Tractors I've seen before, using vertical crankshfts, I'm not sure how a snowblower would attach. The Model 80 may be different. I do remember Matt Gonitzke posting that almost none of the Lawn Tractor parts will cross to a Garden Tractor, so unless the unit is in near mint condition and is able to do a job you need done, I would be wary. But then I don't have the interest in it that yo do.

Brian, the Hydro 80 is a small lawn tractor and would be OK for mowing your lawn but I really doubt it'd be much good at snow removal due to it's light weight. It will be harder to find used parts for it than for your 1250 as the 80 does not share many parts with other Cub Cadets except for the other lawn tractors of that vintage. The Hydro 80 is the same basic tractor as my Spirit of 76 lawn tractor that was posted on the main forum. Main difference other than the color is the 80 is a hydrostatic drive and the 76 is gear drive. Have a look at the photos for size comparison. If you want it for mowing I'd say it might be worth a look but if your interest is in the snow thrower I'd pass. Here's a brochure for you to have a look at:
