On the 129, one of the steering ball joints finally gave it up so I’ve been replacing all 4. When you tighten down on the Castle nuts, how much do you really crank down on them? Just tight and then back off so the cotter pin can go through or tighthen them down until it’s not coming off and then possibly a bit more until the pin aligns? Probably over thinking this but don’t want to damage the replacements. Thoughts? Thank you all.

Torque to spec then tighten to the closest slot. From the service manual:
