Steve, I believe you may be thinking of this one:

Spent some time stripping down the 12 hp Kohler. Guess I need to get a manual to figure out how to get the crank out of it(along with camshaft). I got the balance gears out, but haven't figured out the rest.

If I could get the crank to slip out of the bearing, the camshaft could stay. But the bearing wants to come too and run into cam gear. This is my first single popper so I'm in uncharted territory.

I wanted to just hone the bore and call it good, but with all that stuff in the way you can't clean all the crap out when you're done. Sooooo, guess that leads me to the complete teardown. I can then hot tank the block and really clean it up.

Can you say "Money Pit"?
Ya, I knew you could.

Really Larry,!!
A hot rod guy like you,
Had to watch Youtube,

This is good, Larry, but, trust me, there's nothing like a printed service manual when you get serious about rebuilding one of these K's. An engine stand helps, too, one that lets you attach the block to where the S/G bolts on.

Ya, ya, ya. I figured that would go over like a turd in the punch bowl. Go ahead and poke fun, I've got thick skin.

I learn by doing, so I just dig in and get my hands dirty. I really didn't plan on going this deep, but it just turned that way last night. Just no way around fixing it without tearing it completely down.

Yes, I'll be getting a manual so I can get the balance gears back in it correctly and torque everything down with something besides my 3/4" impact....

Not poking fun - no, no, no! I'm looking at overhauling a V-twin and have done just what you did - went to YouTube to see what I might be getting into. Found out it's a bench job, not an engine stand job. Thing is, that printed manual leads you through it step by step and you can mark where you left off for when you come back to it later.

Larry K,

Ditto what Matt said on the balance gears (aka Grenade gears). Installing David Kirks balance plate on the crank to compensate for the removal the balance gears works well and you won't have to worry about the grenade gears ever again.

I was trying to decide on the balance gears. I'd like to get rid of them. Sadly I want to rid my 149 of them also, but don't want to get into a full tear down of it yet.

Just did a little reading online(no, not Youtube

) about the Kirk balance plate. Interesting. I'll look into it, but I'm going to ask my shop what they would charge to just rebalance the crank and if it would be cheaper to use Mallory instead of machining for the plate(along with purchasing the plate kit). I can do the machine work, but in keeping my local shop alive I may pay him.

Anyone run one of those electronic thingmabobs, ie: transdenser II? Seems like a good idea and since I have an 70's Onan genset I'm thinking I might look into it for that also. I'm used to running points in everything(including my hot rods), but this intrigues me.

Larry K I have the Kirk pointsaver on three
different cubs and have had very good success with it. The light built into the ones I have makes setting points easy.

Charlie, cool clocks!

Those are some scary looking brake pads...
