73 or 1450

I have an opportunity to purchase both a 72 & 73 which need some work for $400 for the pair. The market place listing is “Cub cadet 73 with rear lift and factory weights engine spends over by hand. Cub cadet 72 engine spins by hand. $400 gets you both.”

Or a 1450 for $900 that is listed as “Cub Cadet 1450 with a 48-in mower deck a very good condition rototiller everything runs and works as it should 900 bucks or best offer”


I want a machine to plow my garden with and push snow in my driveway. Mowing with it would be a bonus but not a requirement. I am not sure if I need something as big as the 1450 but my fear is I’ll out grow the 73 faster than I anticipate.

I appreciate any advice

i’d be inclined to recommend the 1450, especially given the purpose for which you seek a garden tractor (tilling-a tiller!).

that said, purchasing both (er, all three) would allow you to capture those weights (a virtual must for snow/ground-engagement traction; chains too), the best of the tires, and anything else that could swap to the 1450 to equip it well.

then whatever you don’t use from the 72/73 could be sold. the rear lift parts alone *could* net you three figure$.

i use a model 100 to push snow, which is effective but always leaves me yearning for hydrostatic drive (and hydraulic lift)!!!

I have a 70 and a 104. As far as power to the rear wheels is concerned, both have enough in first gear to pull a wheelie. The 104 has about 275 pounds of weight, my 225 and chains with cutters. It’ll push 2 feet of snow w/o a problem. HOWEVER, when it comes to pto power…mower, snow blower, tiller, I can see how they both would get winded pretty quick. I would say for a tiller and snow blower that 10 hp would be minimum and even then I’d want a creeper or a hydro transmission. My 2 cts.

Well in a twist of fate I was able to purchase a 126 that came with snow chains and a JD snow plow( will be selling and getting an original CC plow at some point) for $100 it runs and just needs a battery.It needs some restoration(paint new decals, a seat, things like that) Fortunately another gentleman lives close by and has a CC graveyard so I should be able to get what I need fairly easy. I'll post pictures when I get back home with it

OH, and BTW, the 73 had a run of 7,678 units and the 72 had 9,881 built.
Here's my 126 that I restored in 2015 or so.
Was a pile of rusty parts under a tree some stupid kid was going to make a "puller" out of it, geesh

That is the restoration goal for mine. I want to make look like it just came out of the factory as best I can, and I am still going to use it to work(mow, plow the garden and snow plow) but not abuse it obviously.
