have a 2185 with the Kohler 18 horse. It's been starting and running fine. Yesterday it started as usual I mowed about 25 feet and it just quit. It still turns over but doesn't start. I tried putting a bit of fuel in the carb it still doesn't fire. Thats all I've tried so far. I am off tomorrow and was gonna really get to it. If my on line research is correct the Kohler has an ignition module instead of a coil. If I don't get a spark when I ground the plug does that mean ignition module? Could it be a safety killing it?

Paul H. --The answer to your question is "Yes." The magneto could be bad or a safety could be killing it. If you're feeling brave, you could disconnect the "kill" wire at the magneto and be prepared to shut the engine down manually (ground the spark plug(s)) just to eliminate the safety / bad key switch / funky wiring issue.

My two cents.

Paul,
I doubt that it is a safety switch because safety switches stop the engine from turning over in the first place. They don't stop them from firing. I would look at the ignition module or a bad key switch.
