I was given a non-running (for 5+ years) 1541 with a KT17 engine. I replaced the engine with an M18 and removed, replaced, greased, and repaired other parts as was needed. I love the 2 cylinder and how smooth it runs. Changed the steering to all heim joints, I can see why everyone wants the super steer axle as this one has.

What I am considering doing is replace the aluminum transmission with a cast iron one. I looked in the archives and saw where this had been done but I don't know if that is possible with this model. It also appeared as though he (I think it was Matt G.) changed the guts of the cast iron for the fine spline hubs but I don't know if I want to go that far.

Does anyone know if this can be done as a unbolt, bolt up project? The 1541 does have external disc brakes, and I understand from the prior project that some of the hydraulic lines may have to be repositioned.

Larry: I would check with Matt Gonitzke directly, because if I recall correctly some of the "choices" he made were dictated by what what he was trying to do, that is, he may have had to swap the hubs, but I'm not sure; he could tell you "the real deal."

Just a thought . . .
