Last week I bought a 1282. I am a missed place farm boy so I liked the red. I grew up on a Super M and 560D. Anyway the motor knocks some, sometime it's not to bad, but other times it's pretty noticeable. Also it seems like it vibrates a good deal. Any ideas as to the problem? Is it time to pull the motor? I appreciate any suggestions.

Tim: Many, many possibilities....

Since you added that it vibrates a good deal....it might be something as simple as being 'out of time'. That makes a single cylinder Kohler shake, and have a knocking sound. (BTW, the 1282 uses a Isolation mount set-up, and due to age, and the weight of the engine, the rubber ISO mount pieces deteriorate, and the engine will vibrate more than intended/more than is tolerable.)

OR

The rod is worn/loose at the crank, or the wrist pin is worn and the rod is slapping around at the piston....and the ISO mounts are bad........

Bill, Thank you for some very good suggestions. One more question please? How do I check the timing on this guy?

Bill, An update here. I pulled the engine and took it apart. The crank pin was out of round and the wrist pin was worn. I was going to have to go to -.025 or 027 to get the crank pin fixed. This meant I could not find a new rod to fit. So I picked up a used crank on ebay, had it bored -.020 and installed a major rebuild kit. It runs great now. Still a little noise coming from the drive shaft. But other wise great.

glad to see you got it running good. you'll get many good years out of it

I have a 1282 (red one). Currently it has a 44C deck on it. I have found a 44GT deck. Can I easily replace the 44C with a 44GT. Will the same brackets work? I don't mind playing with the brackets but I don't have a welder.

The engine mounts that bolt to the pan on those are occasionally cracked, especially if the opposite bolt is loose or missing. These are (2) formed metal pieces that run front to back and join the oil pan to the iso mount bracket below them. Maybe just loose bolts, mine came loose and it knocked and rattled something terrible at times. One of the afore mentioned mounts was broke as well.

Check the oil for tell tale silver as well, may be an internal problem. Let us know what you find...

44GT deck will pin on as intended, however the 1282 does not lift as high as the tractor that 44GT deck was on, likely a 1535 etc with the "super steer" type of front axle. Go ahead and install it, lots of guys really like that deck on their x82 series tractors. It'll work nice.

Hmmm, I better read those dates first, then I won't be answering year old inquiries.
