Quinn G, Regarding the coil, you can't use a regular automotive coil type on these Kohler engines. It has to have an internal resistor if I remember correctly. The sponsors at the top of the page can help you out with a new one. I think NAPA has a coil available for Kohler engines as well.

Quinn, Sounds like an ignition issue. Did you try a new condenser connected to the coil? Is the condenser lead wire connected to the negative terminal on your coil? Did you try a new or different coil known to be good? Did you try a new spark plug? Sometimes new plugs can even be bad. What...

Danny M, Yep, disconnecting the hydro and brake linkages are a pain on narrow frames when removing the rear end. It's good to know that there's an alternative method of replacing the driveshaft. I never would have thought you could do it the way you did due to getting the fan and shaft...

Danny M, Glad you got your driveshaft out on your 127. As an FYI, the Service Manual recommends removing the rear end for access and replacement of the driveshaft. Either way its a pain. However, taking the engine out does make it easier to hoist the front end up to access the underneath...

Started rebuilding an early K301 (122/3 era). It still has a metal governor gear. First thing the IH Service Manual says for reassembly is to inspect the governor stub shaft for wear and replace if necessary. The gear seemed a little loose on the shaft so I mic'd it and it measures 0.3724"...

Ethan, The PTO safety switch you asked about was added mid-way through the production run for the 1X8/9 series. I believe IH also switched to the brake style PTO clutch in front at the same time as when the switch was added. The switch should be connected in series with the brake pedal safety...

Aaron W, Welcome! Congrats on your new to you 149. The 149 is considered one of the best CC's you could own. You should be able to get Hy-Tran from your local Cub Cadet dealer but they don't call it Hy-Tran, just "Hydraulic/Transmission Fluid". It may be a little more pricey at your CC...

Jenny R, Welcome, as Kraig suggested, you have a Farmall Cub. Cub Cadets weren't introduced until 1961 and are air cooled. I recommend you check the water pump (like Kraig said) but also check the thermostat which is the most likely source of your troubles. It should be in the cooling...

Kraig M, Wow, you are so good! Yes, that illustration does look similar to what I recall.

Paul T, Some of those helper springs may have been part of the Planet Jr. tiller. I remember we traded for one of those Planet Jr. tillers way back and I seem to recall that there were some lift assist springs that were part of its mounting setup.

Kraig M, Earlier this year you posted David Kirk's engine break-in procedure that he gave you for your Killer Kohler engine after he rebuilt it. I thought I made a copy of it but now can't find it. Could you repost it again? Thanks.

Charlie, Are the two outer spindle pulley's mounted upside down? Generally, the hex hub part of those pulleys are on top so you can put a wrench on them when removing/installing the center bolt with the zerk fitting or if you can't get the blade nut to break loose to remove the blade. I...

John M, Also with the switch in the start position, check to make sure the lead wire to the coil is live with a continuity light or voltage meter. Sometimes the switch will go bad and will provide power to the coil in the on position but not in the start position.

Mike, Great question. No it wasn't an anti-rattle spring...sure wish it would have been. It's the triangle spring circled in the picture. I borrowed this from Charlie's website. Hope that's okay.

Had something unfortunate happen over the weekend to the manual front PTO clutch on the 147 which has just been rebuilt. It is the early style PTO with the single triangle spring that has each end tip bent ~90 degrees. Installed a new PTO kit. Followed all the PTO and Service Manual...

Bill B, About the only adjustment for alignment of the rear drive belt between the gearbox pulley and the big tiller input pulley is flipping the gearbox pulley around on the shaft. You will have to see if that will improve your alignment. The big pulley on the tiller generally has the...

Tim, If you are using paint from CaseIH, there should be fine print instructions somewhere on the label. I believe the mix amounts are 8 parts paint and 1 part thinner if I recall correctly from when I mixed up some federal yellow paint the other month to spray on the 147 engine overhaul...
