Jeff B, The 15U Hydro pumps (non-ported/ported) are basically similar. Manual and Auto dump relief valve are interchangeable but wouldn't recommend them be intermixed although that may work okay. What oil are you using in your 1650 transmission? HyTran is the recommended oil which your...

David S, Looks like an 8 hp Kohler K181 out of a John Deere. I think Deere had the muffler mounted on the side like that on one of their model series but have never really paid much attention to those Icky Green Tractors so could be wrong on that part, but the engine sure looks like a K181.

Chris Y, Yes, that is correct on a 4-stroke engine (Intake (Dwn) , Compression (Up), Power (Dwn), Exhaust (Up). (Up & Down = direction of travel for the piston). The points are opened and closed by the camshaft. The crankshaft makes two complete revolutions while the camshaft rotates only...

Jeff B. Great job getting your 1650 running. Since it set for a lengthy period of time, I suspect the damper plate (part with the similar to Chevy emblem shape) is rusted tight to the Hydro pump trunnion shaft, thereby negating the damper springs from doing their job. I'd start with removing...

Kraig, Thanks for the clarifications. Corrections made in my original post. Yes, I meant Myron, not Roland. My apologies.

We should celebrate the milestone with a party and a toast to the next 20 years. Thank and honor those how keep this thing going like Charlie, Kraig, et al. Anyone know how to do a virtual party? Or how about a top 10 list of funniest things posted here? I'm sure Hydro Harry has a few...

Thanks Kraig! That's what I needed. The regulator terminals should be on the right. Just wasn't sure which way they should be positioned as the new harness was long enough to go either way.

Kraig M (Oh great Keeper of the Photos), Do you have a picture in your archive of a narrow frame (preferably a 1x6/7 model) with the hood open showing which side the voltage regulator wire terminals should be on and wire routing, including headlight wires? We are working on a 147 but I...

David K/Matt/Ethan/Jeff/Mark/et al, Regarding the balance gear discussion on QL models, it's interesting that in looking at the CC Parts Lookup site for the 1450 and 1650 (K321AQS & K341AQS) engines, there is no sign of balance gears in the illustrations or in the part number lists that I...

Mark S, I believe most Kohlers in the Quietline series didn't have the grenade balance gears. I'm sure if I'm wrong, others will chime in and let us know.

Chris Y, What Matt G said on the timing but also check the condenser on the coil as it could be going bad. Sometimes the coil will still spark with a bad condenser but irregularly. It can fool you to think the ignition system is working but just not at the right time. Also make sure the...

Ethan, One other thing to do involves the bolts for the transmission back cover plate. I always clean the holes and bolts with carb cleaner and then coat the bolt threads with a light coating of gasket sealer before installation. I've found from experience that sometimes the factory drilled...

Charlie, I think that's more than a $100 dollars of oil, filters and belts, even at dealer prices.

David S, The air cleaner cover you inquired about was for engines equipped with noise suppression. I've never seen one but I believe it was an option, likely available through parts as a kit, as I don't remember it being a factory option but don't quote me on that. There was a special noise...

Christopher Y, Welcome. You could also have a problem with your Starter-Generator (SG) such as needing new brushes. Check out the FAQ items below: http://cubfaq.com/sg.html http://cubfaq.com/sgrepair.html Run the test first. Also before tearing into the SG, check all wire...

Mike C, If you don't have compression after you heard the snapping noise, you most likely broke the connecting rod inside the engine. Other causes could be blown spark plug or head gasket or broken piston. Did you check the oil level before starting the engine after you got it. The most...

David S/Lew/Harry/Lewis, As Harry mentioned, David has the clips mounted correctly (pointing down) for his 149. The 1X8/9 Series engines had the clips pointed down for the coil lead wire. Narrow frame models where the gas tank was mounted directly to the engine using the same two attach...

David S, Those wire clips had black rubber dip below the attaching bolt hole to the rolled end. They were installed on the engine fan shroud and painted yellow, most likely at Kohler. The black rubber dip is usually peeled of and pretty much gone after 40 yrs use. I typically straighten...
