    Cold Start

I got my 782 with 900 hours on the clock at an auction a little over a year ago. The first thing it needed was a starter, which was no fun to R & R. Then I found that it was hard to start. Full choke would immediately flood the engine. When it did fire, it would fire once then kick out the...

    Motor oil

Yes, it certainly is. Current Kohler and Briggs engines are examples, but are appliances of today. My Kenmore reefer of 1981 and GE heat pump of the same year lasted 30 years, and were still working when I replaced them. I can't get 10 years out of either device now.

    Motor oil

Plastic engine guts! Engines like this won't be around 60+ years later like the good old bullet-proof, reliable Kohler cast iron K-engines of the past!

    Motor oil

I've been using Wally World's Super Tech straight 30 weight diesel engine oil in my Kohler engines for years. It has the necessary zinc in it that today's auto oils don't. Never had an issue of any kind

1512D Spiral pin on driveshaft keeps fallling out. What should I do?

Ditto the safety wire, but the key is to make a tight joint with no relative movement.

1512D Spiral pin on driveshaft keeps fallling out. What should I do?

It's been almost 38 years ago when my old boss sold me a used and abused Cadet 100. After a few weeks of mowing, the driveshaft rollpin failed. I drilled out the hole a bit and installed an aircraft "AN" bolt and locknut. That lasted about 8 months before it was bitten in half. Then I came...

Parts for rebuilding the steering column on 100

I had the same issue when I rebuilt the steering gear on my 100. I turned mine on a shop lathe, eliminating the flat spots and recreating the original profile. It wound up being a bit shorter but that was no issue when installing and adjusting it.

That's the pair of 10 HP decals!

    K301 rebuild

Try Midwest Restoration Parts on eBay for #224906109529 Kohler metal dataplate ($35). Most jewelers can replicate the engraving from your old plate. Engine HP decals that go on the fuel tank can be had thru eBay as well.

    105 cub

Sorry, but I disagree. It's best for break-on.

    105 cub

I've "resurrected" a number of K241 and K301 engines on the cheap, so you might try this: Get a gasket set for your engine. Remove the head, then rotate the engine and put the piston at bottom center. Check the cylinder bore for vertical scoring. If you see none, check the bore diameter to see...

    Cold Start

My 782 (obtained at an auction last year) was always a bear to start. The starter kicked out too soon, and all choking did was flood the engine. I put in a new fuel.pump, but nothing changed. Once while mowing, it quit cold. After towing to my garage, I checked the gas, points, etc., but I had...

    Motor oil

Our small town installed two large tanks in a three-sided enclosure for people to dump their used engine oil. The town sells it to a concern that processes it into industrial fuel.

    K301 rebuild

When I rebuilt my 1964 K241 in 1986, I sprayed everything (block, shrouds, baffles, fuel tank, generator, etc.) with IH Cub Cadet yellow (I forget the code number), and it has lasted to date. You can't paint the head, though. You can use a high heat aluminum, silver or black paint, like VHT, on...

    K301 rebuild

Measure the bore at the bottom to be sure it's actually .010" oversize!

    Dead mower

Just run one cable from the battery + post to the starter post. Crank until the engine starts, then remove it. Be sure the ignition switch is in the run position.

    What model/year is my cub?

49004....your Cub Cadet seems to have been built in December of 1962.

Metal Lock Nuts on 1450 engine rails

Never use locknuts with nylon or fiber inserts on anything that gets hot!

The hood on the 782 was rusted. I think the former owner stored things on it with rags or cloth material next to the sheet metal. After some sanding prep, I found that Rustoleum Farmall Red in rattle cans was as close to an exact match to the original color as one could expect. I found, too...

I've been involved with Cub Cadets since my father bought an original back in 1961, then a 105 in 1967. Those old cast iron Kohler engines were the absolute best, are easy to repair, and will last forever with a bit of care and maintenance. I currently have a 1964 Model 100 that I rescued...
