    With the v-belt loose or disconnected from the starter / generator, does the engine still turn hard? If yes, start disassembling til you find out why it's in a bind! If no, then look into the Starter/Generator....

    Sorry, I don't know that part number. The spring should be fine I would think. .And I don't know how many different idler numbers there might be. I wouldn't think there would be a lot of different ones.. but what do I know! LOL.

    Yes, they should all spin freely, I have a relative with that same mower. And just weeks ago I had to replace the middle spindle and found that pivoting idler wouldn't.. it was frozen under the pivot. That clip had a couple "bumps" that acted as an index to hold it in the proper position...

    Have you verified the spindles and idler(s) are free?

    Sounds like the safety switch is causing the issue. Do you have a digital meter? Can you test continuity across the switches?

    "When the engine warms up would the ring expand enough to not turn over like it should?" Yes. the gap will become smaller, the ends could touch and the ring could tighten against the cylinder. But if that were true, then when cold it would spin over fine.

    Does the Starter/Generator spin good when it's not connected to the engine? I have run them unloaded and let them spin for a minute or so and many times you can actually hear the rpm's really climb. Then reconnect the belt and see if it's improved.
