I needed to replace a Toro 265-6 1995 after a part failed and wasn't viable $$$ to fix. So after looking around a month found a 1450. Serial number 622580. Nothing special condition wise but it runs well and cut the grass/leaves today just fine. I picked it up in the dark last night not realizing a couple things-hand speed control not a foot pedal and no brakes? There is a clutch pedal it seems or is that actually a brake pedal (must he depressed to start engine)?
It is a beautiful machine, steers very well and built to last. What should I lnow about preserving it?

Verified the brakes do work on left pedal. Are they wet brakes or caliper/disc as parts diagram shows both and I forgot to look (tractor is parked at my property an hour away).
It is slow cranking with a fresh battery even boosting with truck battery, wiring looks old and wondering if starters are known to need care after all these years or just refreshing cables/connections/contacts.
Getting new belts soon and will do fluids/filter once it is put away for winter.
 
Look at the rear end-axle housing--if you can see the brakes on the end of the axle housing you have external brakes. If nothing is attached to the axle housing you have internal (wet brakes)

I seem to recall the hydros had disc/caliper brakes and the gear drives had wet/internal brakes. Most likely a 1450 has disc brakes. I’d clean up your wiring connections especially the grounds. You can check your starter with a set of jumpers directly to the starter. If it turns over quicker than you have an issue with wiring.

No...there is a serial number break. Early had external brakes, 3/4" front spindles, and an iron lower grille housing. Late had internal brakes, aluminum axle tubes, 1" front spindles, aluminum lower grille housing, and the same style steering wheel used on the 82 series. Gear drive vs hydro is irrelevant.
 
The Quietline series is like the red headed stepchild of the IH line.... overlooked but really nice when they're taken care of. My 1450 has been so reliable and always ready to go... Enjoy it, it's fairly easy to work on and will outlast your basic needs if you take care of it.

Be interesting to know what the serial break is. I have a 1650, S/N 2050670U639488, with 3/4" spindles, new style steering wheel and internal brakes. Not sure on grille housing but think it's cast iron.
 
632502 should be the break according to the parts lookup. I wonder if someone changed out the front spindles on your tractor at some point.

Service bulletin S-3336, dtd 3 Sep 76 states that effective 6/30/76 and with S/N 590522, 1450's and 1650's will have the new automatic check valves which replace the manual valves.

Service bulletin S-3497, dtd 6/11/77 states that beginning with S/N 597245, the 1250's changed over to the new automatic check valves.

Appreciate all the info! Pretty sure my lower grill is pot metal or alloy judging by the corrosion, certainly not cast iron.
So far working great, I changed the oil, adjusted the pto belt tension (so simple) and greased a few points. Found a suitable deck wheel for the missing one. Seems pretty fuel efficient for the job it does and working it hard with the fall leaves down. Very happy. Just find the hand controls challenging compared to a foot pedal but on the flip side it acts like cruise control!

It will not move cars around without better traction which my gear drive Toro could do most of the time but asking 800lbs (rider included) to move 2000-3000lbs maybe unreasonable on grass/gravel surfaces.

Next up servicing hydro system and deck.
