I have tried setting the idle almost off it still keeps running .its a hydro so not much luck trying to snub it only way is to shut the fuel off . any ideas ? It scares me sounds like it could blow up it bag so hard. HELP !! thanks Mike

What model?

Let it idle for 5 min before shutting it off. Timing might be off, or there is a sharp-edge piece of carbon or something else in the combustion chamber glowing.

Mike, you didn't say what engine. Newer carbs have solenoid on bottom to control fuel flow.If it is stuck open it could still draw fuel as engine winds down. This sol. came about because of backfires.Too many shut down engines at full throttle instead of idling down first thus sucking fuel into hot cyl...Older carbs still often backfire when shut down too quick..Matt was right idle first....

I agree with Matt and Gary but the motor type would help the community diagnose. - That solenoid has been an issue for me on my ztr’s. I wouldn’t call it dieseling ( ala Clark griswald’s wagon queen family truckster) but it takes a good 5 seconds or more to stop running after the key is off or I trip a safety no matter what engine speed is at prior to shutting off.

Mike,DO you mean engine is making banging noises as it shuts down.? Recently found my 1650 motor mount rubbers were in very bad shape!! When it reached low rpm it made some serious banging noises which turned out to be mounting bolts slamming into front engine cover because rubbers were shot. Replacement was neccessary!!

"12HP Kohler" = K301? Tractor model would still help. What Gary is saying would only be a possibility if it is a 1250 ,1282, 1210, or 1211.

What happens if you let it idle for 5 min before shutting it off? Are there any signs it is overheating, such as the muffler elbow glowing? When is the last time the head was off and decarboned?
